- THE MOUSE BUTTONS AND KEYBOARD: Using
- the mouse is the easiest way to do
- things in this program but there is
- nothing that can't be done with just
- the keyboard. You can move the cursor
- around with the mouse or with the
- cursor keys. When <Num Lock> is on,
- you can use the cursor keys on the
- number pad (2,4,6 and 8) to move the
- cursor beyond the visible edge of the
- screen. When using the cursor keys,
- the <+> and <-> keys will speed up
- and slow down the cursor.
- In this and the other help files:
- Keys and key combinations are shown
- in angled brackets (e.g. <Esc>);
- Clicking, left-clicking and choosing
- all refer to placing the cursor on an
- item and pressing the left mouse
- button or <Enter> on the keyboard;
- Right-clicking refers to pressing the
- right mouse button or <Esc>; Dragging
- means to hold the right or left mouse
- button down as you move the mouse.
- If you are prompted for a yes or no
- answer (e.g. Overwrite file?) you can
- press <Y> or left-click for yes or
- press <N> or right-click for no.
- You can also use <Ins> instead of
- <Esc> to move the deck. To move the
- deck with the mouse you right-click on
- it and drag it to where you want it.
- To move it with the keyboard you can
- use <Esc> or the <Insert> key. The
- deck will move with the cursor until
- you press <Esc>. The <Ins> option
- allows you to move the deck while
- defining a Spread. The deck can't be
- moved if you are in a spread.
- (See SPREAD help for more on this)
- To toggle the menu-bar on and off
- right-click while the cursor is not on
- the deck or on a card while in a
- spread in interpretation mode.
- (See SPREAD help for more on spreads).
- This program has three main modes:
- Card manipulation mode in which you
- deal out cards and place them where
- you want; Interpret mode in which you
- can get various interpretations;
- Spread mode where the cards will
- automatically be placed into position
- when you deal them (See SPREAD help).
- The program starts out in card
- manipulation mode.
- To deal a card, left-click on the deck
- The card will appear on the top of the
- deck or to one side of it depending on
- the setting of the Deal toggle in the
- DECK sub-menu (See DECK help). To move
- a card left-click on it and then drag
- it to where you want it. If you
- pressed <Enter> to left-click, you
- will have to press <Esc> to drop the
- card.
- You can deal and move the card all in
- one motion if the Deal toggle is
- set to TOP. Just click on the deck and
- drag the card to where you want it.
- You can also move a group of cards.
- Left click on a card and hold down the
- <Ctrl> key and/or the <Alt> key. Use
- the <Ctrl> key to move the card the
- cursor is on and all the cards under
- it which overlaps its position. Use
- the <Alt> key to move the card and
- all overlapping cards above it. Hold
- down both <Ctrl> and <Alt> to move
- all the cards above and below which
- overlap the key cards position. All
- cards meeting the chosen criteria will
- disappear until you have moved the
- key card into the new position for the
- group. Hold down the mouse button
- until the key card appears with the
- move-group cursor on it. It may take
- a while to calculate which cards
- should be moved and then redraw the
- screen without them. Once you see
- the key card with the
- three-overlapping-cards cursor on it
- you can move it into the new position
- and release.
- In Interpret mode, clicking on a card
- will bring up an interpretation for
- that card and clicking on the deck
- will bring up the Overview (See
- EXAMINE help). To toggle in and out of
- Interpret mode press the left and
- right mouse buttons at the same time
- or choose CARD from the EXAMINE sub-
- menu. An "I" will appear on the deck
- in interpret mode. In addition to
- using the cursor to choose items on
- the menu bar, you can press the first
- letter of the sub-menu you wish to
- open (e.g. to open the DECK sub-menu
- press <d>). In the sub-menus you can
- hit the number of the item you want to
- choose as if the items where numbered
- from top to bottom (e.g. to shuffle
- the deck, press<1> while the DECK
- sub-menu is open or press <2> to cut
- etc.). Here are a few more functions
- you should know about.
- Press <F1> to get help. Which help
- file comes up depends on where you are
- at in the program. Choose MENU from
- the HELP sub-menu to choose the help
- file you want. The middle mouse button
- (if you have one) acts as the Face
- Up/Dn toggle (See DECK help). Pressing
- all three mouse buttons, on a three
- button mouse, will quit the program.
- You can also quit by pressing <Alt-X>
- or by choosing QUIT from the FILE
- sub-menu.
-
- COORDINATE READOUT: Press <F2> to
- get a coordinate readout of the cursor
- and the deck or any dealt card. The
- readout will appear in the lower left
- of the screen but can be toggled to
- the lower right with <F3>. the lower
- pair of numbers represent the x,y
- coordinates of the cursor and the
- upper pair represent either the deck
- or one of the dealt cards. The word
- "Deck" will appear in front of the top
- numbers if it is showing the
- coordinates for the deck or the word
- "Card" and a number will appear if the
- coordinates are for one of the cards
- (1 for the first card dealt, 2 for the
- second etc.). The numbers on top
- represent the x and y location of the
- upper left corner of the deck or card.
- Use <Pgup> and <Pgdn> to cycle thru
- the dealt cards and deck coordinates.
- You can use this readout to place the
- cards exactly where you want them
- (slow the cursor down and use the
- cursor keys to get pixel-perfect
- postioning). You can also use this
- readout for moving cards around beyond
- the visible edge of the screen.
-
- THE TEXT VIEWER/EDITOR: This is what
- pops up loaded with interpretations,
- help files or comments. You can view
- the file, edit it and even erase it
- and start a new file. The files
- created with this editor can be used
- in any DOS ascii text editor and you
- can read and edit any ascii file in
- this editor. As an editor it is very
- basic. You can't cut and paste blocks
- of text for example. If you want more
- sophisticated editing abilities you
- can use your favorite text editor
- outside of this program (See the file
- "TAROT2.DOC" for a list of file names
- for the various interpretations etc.).
- Loading files is usually done
- automatically when you choose COMMENT
- from the SPREAD sub-menu or when you
- click on a card or the deck in
- interpret mode or when you seek help.
- You can also open any text file you
- want by pressing <Alt-O> from the main
- screen (that is when no other
- functions are active). The file dialog
- box will appear with "*.CDI" as the
- wildcard spec. CDI is the extention
- for the card interpretations. You can
- type in the name, and path, of any
- text file and it will be loaded into
- this editor (See FILE help for more on
- using the file dialog box). This
- editor only loads a maximum of 23
- kilobytes. If the file you load is
- more than this a beep will sound while
- it is loading and the file will be
- truncated within this editor. Make
- sure you exit without saving or the
- file will be saved in the truncated
- state. There are two ways to exit the
- editor; to exit without saving and to
- exit and save your changes. You can
- exit without saving by right-clicking.
- To exit and save any changes you made,
- when you choose EDIT or NEW or when
- you are first creating a file or when
- you are in a comment, click on CLOSE
- or press <Alt-C>. Clicking on CLOSE
- will exit without saving if you
- haven't chosen EDIT or NEW while
- viewing the file. If you are in a
- comment you will be prompted whether
- or not you want to save the comment
- even if you haven't made any changes.
- Clicking on EDIT or pressing <Alt-E>
- will toggle between view mode and edit
- mode in the editor. In edit mode a
- flashing cursor will appear and you
- can enter or delete text. Click on the
- right end of the editor's menu bar,
- where the letter 'O' or 'I' appears,
- or press <Insert> to toggle between
- insert and overwrite mode. <Delete>
- will delete the letter under the
- cursor and the backspace key will
- delete the letter to the left.
- Pressing <Enter> will move the cursor
- and any text above and to it's right
- to the next line.
- Letters are wrapped to the next line
- when you reach the right edge and you
- will hear a beep. In insert mode when
- the number of letters (including
- spaces you added) exceeds the maximum
- for a line, the line will be split at
- the cursor. Use the cursor keys to
- move the cursor around within the
- file. The <Home> and <End> keys move
- the cursor to the start and end of the
- line. Move to the top of the page with
- <Ctrl-Home>and to the page bottom with
- <Ctrl-End>.Page up and down with
- <Pgup> and <Pgdn> and move to the very
- top of the file and the very bottom
- with <Ctrl-Pgup> and <Ctrl-Pgdn>. You
- can move the cursor to any letter by
- moving the mouse cursor to that letter
- and clicking the left button. You can
- also use the mouse with the scroll bar
- along the right edge. The two ovals
- represent the very top and bottom of
- the file. The single arrows represent
- one line up or down and the double
- arrows represent one page up or down.
- In view mode you can use the scroll
- bar the same way as well as the <Pgup>
- and <Pgdn> and <Ctrl-Pgup & Pgdn>
- keys. Press <Home> and <End> to move a
- line up and down in view mode as the
- cursor keys move the mouse cursor
- around. To delete all the text and
- start fresh choose NEW or press
- <Alt-N>. Remember you can alway exit
- without saving your changes by
- right-clicking.
